A beat I made with my Guava Jumex mastering template to show new listeners what my chain does. Listeners from the past 2-3 years know that this is a typical Doctor Guava sound and so to people that have wanted to learn or emulate from that... here is one of many approaches.

Before I continue, I have Ableton Live 10 Suite, some of these might not work if you don't have Suite or Standard.. and I totally understand if you don't. If you do not, some of these might still be in effect... however I would also just encourage reading the description and building off that alone.

Guava Jumex is a name for a mastering chain that I use often, that I wanted to share with you guys. It has 6 macros chained to various parts of the chain, which when you're comfortable with can open and EXPLORE.

The 6 macros included are Compression - Bitcrush - EQ/Comp Vol. - Low Cut - Saturation - Tape Dust - Color - Multiband Comp

I will now explain each one in small detail.. stay with me.

Flattenator compressor I love to use because it feels like the type of fat compression I'd get from the SP404. Won't be the same but I enjoy this compressor a lot. Adjust to your liking by opening up.

Bitcrush is easy, I love the crunchy sound it gives me.. you can even go further with that and open the chain to degrade the sound how you desire. I really feel it helps glue everything together and helps age it.

EQ/Comp Vol. is the middle part of the chain 4 me, it helps me tone down the volumes (after mixing the best I can of course) and helps me compress the track further if needed. I can also lower or raise the volume how I feel based on how the song is feeling at the time which helps me control transients (I don't like things too loud).

Low-cut is simple, if you want a small variation in your loop or want to take away the lows before a major part of the beat. There you go, use as you like.. for intro/outro/the world is yours.

Saturation is like glue for me and helps me dirty up/warm a sound, I enjoy using it in the mastering rack. I always recommend saturating stuff even just a tad bit.

Tape Dust comes from beat dirt which is what I believe to be a tape/old-school feel emulator. This helps me color my sound a lot. This goes back to the debate on which machine is best.. I love ableton and I love that I can degrade sonic sound in order to emulate older machines.

Color isn't too big of a deal, it makes a difference though.. it is a lo-pass filter that if you play with, you can hear lower your bass tones and help focus ears on a certain range of sound. Which is pretty neat.

Multiband Compression in this case helps me tighten up my overall sound in mastering. Really helps bring in lows while regulating sonic differences in the lows/mids/highs. If used separately I believe it could do a lot more.

There's a lot more you can look at if you open the chain.. I highly suggest doing that because the more you know your sound.. the better you'll feel about what you make. This is meant to be a good starting point towards mastering, I still encourage building your own mastering racks. As well as learning to mix how YOU want to.
